Ben Barba is on fire and the form player in the comp, while their pack is among the best in the NRL, even without Kasiano.

The Cowboys have won four of their past five matches to sneak under the radar and into fourth spot on the NRL ladder. Neil Henry’s men beat the Tigers in Townsville on Monday night and claimed the prize scalp of the Storm a fortnight ago to prove they are a genuine force in 2012.

This will be the fight of the week, for as long or as short as it lasts. I just don’t see a way that lightweights Lundy and Beltran won’t go together well. Philly’s Lundy (22-1-1) is powerful, fast and dumb. Maybe not personally, but he’s definitely boxing dumb. The loss on his record came against John Molina in a fight that Lundy had in the bag before clowning and getting himself KTFO. Against David Diaz, Lundy fought Diaz’ fight and went down before knocking Diaz out in a candidate for last year’s Fight of the Year. Manny Pacquiao sparring partner Beltran (25-6) does a lot of things Diaz does, but has less miles on the clock, despite what his record might indicate. Trained by Freddie Roach, he’s a tough, honest guy and a big puncher. So basically you have two big punchers. One, Lundy, is a tremendous physical specimen burdened by an iffy chin and a penchant for in-the-ring stupidity. The other, Beltran, is tougher but older, slower and less gifted. What the hell is not to like?
Tonight at 10 p.m. EDT on ESPN2 and ESPN3.com, Hank Lundy will face Raymundo Beltran in a 10-round lightweight bout that has a lot more on the line than we knew just a few days ago, as Lundy is now reported to be the leading candidate to face Adrien Broner on October 6 in Atlantic City.

That fight would be huge for Lundy, a 28-year-old Philadelphia fighter whose climb up the ladder has been widely seen on the Friday Night Fights program. Over time, we’ve seen him, as Teddy Atlas says, morph from a really reckless sort into a better, more complete professional fighter, and in his last fight against Dannie Williams on March 30, he put on his best performance to date, dominating another good young fighter and flat-out taking Williams to school over 10 rounds.

It seems like a long time ago that Lundy (22-1-1, 11 KO) was caught and stopped by John Molina on FNF, his lone career defeat. At that time, his chin was questioned, and so was his style. Since then, he’s made steady improvements, and become a contender in the lightweight division.

But if he’s going to get to Adrien Broner, he’ll have to go through a tough veteran tonight in Raymundo Beltran. Beltran (25-6, 17 KO) hasn’t scored many notable wins over his 13-year pro career, but he’s a tough out and nobody to play around with. His most recent two losses came to unbeaten prospects Sharif Bogere and Luis Ramos Jr, and in both fights, he had an argument for the win. I actually scored both fights for Beltran, but I didn’t think he was robbed in either bout — he just came up short on the cards.

The 31-year-old Beltran isn’t afraid to make a fight rough, and given Lundy’s prickly demeanor, that could mean a nasty fight tonight. Both the Bogere and Ramos fights featured plenty of blood, particularly the Bogere battle, and Beltran isn’t shy about using his head. Lundy will have a speed advantage, but Bogere had a big one, too. It will be up to Lundy’s power and ability to stay at distance, where Beltran can be neutralized. If Raymundo gets inside, all hell can break loose. Not only is he willing to get his hands and head dirty, but he’s also just a pretty good fighter.

It’s also worth noting that Lundy took four attempts to make weight yesterday, originally coming in at 136.2 pounds on his first try. Eventually, the NABF stepped in with their rule book and frankly gave Lundy a bit of a break, with the fighter finally weighing 134.8. If that took a toll on him, this could be a really dangerous fight.

If Lundy wins tonight, it looks like he might be headed to the HBO spotlight. But don’t count Beltran out, either. And truly, this is a Friday Night Fights worth tuning in to see — not only might you be seeing Adrien Broner’s next opponent in the main event, but the fight could be a damn good one, too.

Prediction

I’m assuming Lundy isn’t messed up by the weight issues yesterday making this pick, so keep that in mind. I like Lundy in this one, and I think he should be able to win without any questions about the scoring. Beltran is a good, tough fighter, but I believe Lundy is a good bit ahead of Bogere and Ramos. He’s faced better opposition, been through tougher battles, and proven himself capable of coming back from adversity.

I also do believe Lundy will be able to maintain some distance if he fights smart the way he did against Dannie Williams. But there’s a chance Lundy’s natural instincts will kick in and he’ll get into a pure throwdown, too. Either way, I think he’s the better fighter, and I think we’re going to see him back in Atlantic City on October 6. And if he gets there, I think Adrien Broner might be getting more than he bargained for, too. Lundy by decision.

Taking the field at Manchester United’s revered 75,000 seat home ground, dubbed the Theatre of Dreams by United and England great Bobby Charlton, is one of the perks of playing a football tournament in the United Kingdom.New Zealand coach Neil Emblen, who never played at Old Trafford during a successful professional career in England, says the historic surrounds should inspire a little extra from his players as they chase a groundbreaking Olympic win.
Any tiredness or fatigue in the legs will quickly be lost when they walk out on that ground,” Emblen said.
If you can’t get motivated just that little bit more when you play at Old Trafford then you probably shouldn’t be paying the game.
It’ll be inspirational for both teams and there’ll be a big crowd in for a double header which will just add to the occasion.”
Regardless of the venue, which the Oly Whites got a brief taste of at a walkover the night before the match, the team are not short on motivation.
The side outplayed Belarus in Coventry on Friday but lost 0-1 but a win over Egypt would leave their qualification fate in their own hands heading into Thursday’s final group match against medal favourites Brazil.
The Egyptians look to be a step up from the Eastern Europeans after fighting back from a three goal deficit to lose 2-3 to a star studded Brazil.
But Emblen believes the possession based game his side employed with aplomb against Belarus is effective enough, albeit with some improvements, to get the result New Zealand need.
“It’ll be more of the same from us.”
“I was happy with the way we played although we need to be better at taking chances and could be even more adventurous when we’re on the ball, and create some more overloads and two-v-ones in certain areas.

“If we get that right and add to what we’re are already doing then I’m confident the performance will be good enough to produce a result.”

Emblen has no new fitness concerns and while goalkeeper Jake Gleeson is getting closer to full fitness, the Portland Timbers custodian is not there yet and given Michael O’Keeffe’s overall performance against Belarus, and the likely need for all three outfield substitutes in the midday kickoff, the Oly Whites coach is unlikely to risk Gleeson.

A new policy which meant youth players were integrated in the squad earlier, because there were no funds for expensive transfer signings.With the young squad Feyenoord surprised everyone with a second place, and now they are playing qualifications for the millions-fest called Champions League. The season hasn’t started for Feyenoord yet and this will be the first official match of the season.The squad that reached the second place last season is far from intact however, with 4 key players no longer at the club. This week captain and key defender Ron Vlaar signed for Aston VIlla, and earlier two of the 3 players of the impressive midfield, El Ahmadi and Bakkal, and their influential topscorer Guidetti left the club.

These players are quality players and with the departure of them they lose a lot of quality and experience. Feyenoord did sign a couple of players, most of them players with expiring contracts and talented guys with potential, but none of them ready for Champions League fixtures.

Offensive midfielder Immers is signed and he comes from ADO Den Haag for 800k, midfielder Singh from Valerenga for 300k, midfielder Vormer from Roda JC, winger Goossens from NEC, right-back Janmaat from Heerenveen and forward Te Vrede from Excelsior (all free transfers). Players of mid-table clubs in the Eredivisie, and now they must perform on the highest platform in the first official match. Goossens and Te Vrede are injured and will not feature in this match.

The last pre-season friendly against Mallorca showed, just as earlier friendlies, what the problem is, scoring goals. The match finished 0-0 and even though Feyenoord was the dominant side by far, they couldn’t manage to score a goal. They are lacking a goalscorer, current forwards Fernandez, Cissé and Schaken are far from prolific and the gap after the departure of Guidetti isn’t filled in. And with the last-minute transfer of Vlaar they now have a young and inexperienced couple at the back, including 20-year old captain de Vrij.

Dynamo Kiev

Dynamo Kiev, one of the two top clubs in Ukraine, is eager to return to the Champions League after two failed attempts in the qualifiers in the previous two seasons.

Dynamo Kiev is doing transfer deals in a whole different range of players, as they already spent 35 million euro’s on transfers. Impressive players as Marco Ruben (Villareal), Miguel Veloso (Genoa) and Niko Kranjcar (Spurs) were already signed, and a couple of days ago they spent 10 million for forward Raffael of Hertha BSC.

These players are added to a squad that already had a bundle of talent with players as Yarmolenko and topscorer Ideye Brown.

Dynamo Kiev already started their season and it is no surprise they are on a 100% record with 9 points out of 3 matches. Friday they beat Zakarpattya, after they were down a goal after 20 minutes they scored the equaliser 10 minutes later, and Ideye Brown scored two goals in the final five minutes of the game to take the final score to 3-1.

Brown has taken his tally to 4 goals so far this season in the Premier League, of the 5 goals the team scored. The first two league matches both finished in a 1-0 victory.

The Samba Boys coach Mano Menezes could rest some of his stars after sealing a quarter-final berth. Players like Lucas Moura and Leandro Damaio could start while key players like Oscar, Neymar, Sandro and Romelu could be rested.

Brazil has never won gold at the games despite being one of the top football teams but they seem to be heading in the right direction after consecutive wins against Egypt and Belarus while the Kiwis drew their match against Egypt but lost to Belarus.

The last time these two sides met Brazil thrashed New Zealand 5-0. The Kiwis will have to hope against hope due to the fact that they have never won a game against the mighty Brazilians. However, The Samba Boys shaky defence is their only plus point to have any hopes of going through.

While the Brazilians have tormented their opponents in every game, and with New Zealand being the weakest team in the group, Brazil are clear favourites to beat them and top the group.

Santos striker Neymar has been sensational so far at the games including new chelsea signing Oscar. The trio including Hulk are a formidable striker force in front of goal.

New Zealand’s West Brom striker Chris Wood is the only goalscorer for his side and will hope to upset the shaky Brazilian defence.

Brazil may have never won the Olympics in their illustrious history with the game, however, the presence of the likes of Oscar, Hulk , Neymar and Thiago Silva has built a strong case for the team raising them to the status of favourites.


However, the team is till to realize that their journey to podium is going to take much more than expectations, and the team will look to learn from their mistakes of the game against Egypt.


The Canaries seemed to have wrapped up the game in the first half, but their complacency saw them suffer a scare against the modest Egypt.


The match against the Egyptians have also highlighted that the illustrious attack of the formidable Brazilians has come with an Achilles’ heel placed in the defence.


The favourites will also take confidence from the fact that all of field players have tasted International experience with the senior team, and will look to finish off the Belarusians who have but little to threaten their might.


Belarus


The Red Devils are making their debut in Olympics, and will have their first taste of top class football against the Brazilians.


However, they did not start the game against New Zealand as the favourites, but bagged the important victory through a gritty performance in their first group match.


The Belarusians are expected to continue with their 4-5-1 formation, and may even park the bus in front of their goal when faced with the under-23 giants.


However, they have proved that they come with their fair share of fangs, and will be looking to capitalise on the opportunities that are presented to them by the shaky Brazilian defence.


They may not take the attack to the Little Canaries but they do have the gritty nature of a good underdog, and will not spare any defensive mistake on part of their opponents.

Moreover, the team will also want to retain their tactical formations and attacking mentality towards the game, although they will wish to concede fewer goals this time around.
